Strength in numbers

We all know about the importance of being part of an art community for support as an artist, and the importance of customer/client support to keep us going.
That said, some of the best support I’ve gotten didn’t come from other artists or even my clients.

Some of the best support I’ve gotten came from small business owners who know what it’s like to do it tough, and generously offered me a helping hand.

Resolving my issues with motivation

I’m a little OCD. Ok, a lot.
I analyse everything with the (possibly slightly unhealthy) belief I can apply a system to it, tidy it up, organize it, control it.
And then maybe blog about it a little…

The good news this time, dear reader?
I believe I have finally figured out what, for me at least, causes a major motivation crisis.
Aha!
And, maybe, just maybe, forewarned is forearmed. And I can avoid pounding the desk with my forehead.

It’s all about motivational equilibrium!

Stretching the freelancing dollar (or, being a stingy bastard to survive)

Money as a freelancer is often, shall we say…sporadic.
One day week working on a job, raking in $1000, the next you’re twiddling your thumbs and wondering if the electricity company would accept payment in stale breadsticks swiped from that Italian restaurant a month ago…and if so, what the hell are you going to eat?

We’re all trying to save money, but the freelance lifestyle makes it especially vital for freelancers to learn how to bargain shop.
So how do you do it?

The stone

“Aren’t you scared?”
said the sea to the stone,
“To crumble and turn into dust?
Eroding away,
to be gone someday…
does it hurt? ‘Cause it seems like it must.”

“I’m not scared”
said the stone to the sea
“You live a long time as a stone.
To crumble away
to be gone someday
scares me less than an aeon alone.”

Another time lapse video

Still learning to use time lapse software!

This time I’m painting a dog in photoshop. I’m unable to show the full image (or the finished image) just yet, but you can see bits of what I’m doing here, and the finished image should be available for release reasonably soon.

FREAKS!

The online world, as it turns out, is full of freaks. I know. I’m shocked too.

Given the universe’s fondness of me, it decided that, as I’d completed building my storage space behind my desk, and as Seth and I were trying to organise a trip to the USA, now would be an ideal time to drop a real stinkeroonie on us and force us to move.
Our landlord wishes to renovate, beginning with the removal of us.
Them’s the brakes.
We start packing.

Now, this has been an ideal time for me to realise that, actually, we don’t really need most of the stuff we have.
Thus I do my bit to keep an excellent community moving and earn myself some karma points (to be redeemed upon death – I’m going to swap mine for a book voucher I think) and log into my local chapter of freecycle to offer a tv.

Now, it seems there are some lovely people there. They sent my emails asking politely if they may collect it. I said yes to the first, and friendly ‘sorry, but it’s already been claimed’ emails to the others.

But some emails? Some people?

FREAKS!

“I wunt ur tv plz give me”.

Yes, that was an email in it’s entirety. Sure mate, I’m real keen on giving YOU my home address.

And another, that came in at 11.30pm as I was just about to switch off for bed:

“HELLO THIS IS (NAME).
Would like TV u r ridding of please. Would like to collect TODAY. In car with iphone. Need ur addy. Will pick up NOW. BRT. ADDRESS PLEASE.”

Are you from Syria? Are you serious?
WHAT THE HELL, PEOPLE?
What. The. Hell.

The moral of this story?
Beware, people!
For freaks walk amongst us.
