Strength in numbers
We all know about the importance of being part of an art community for support as an artist, and the importance of customer/client support to keep us going.
That said, some of the best support I’ve gotten didn’t come from other artists or even my clients.
Some of the best support I’ve gotten came from small business owners who know what it’s like to do it tough, and generously offered me a helping hand.

Stretching the freelancing dollar (or, being a stingy bastard to survive)

Money as a freelancer is often, shall we say…sporadic.
One day week working on a job, raking in $1000, the next you’re twiddling your thumbs and wondering if the electricity company would accept payment in stale breadsticks swiped from that Italian restaurant a month ago…and if so, what the hell are you going to eat?
We’re all trying to save money, but the freelance lifestyle makes it especially vital for freelancers to learn how to bargain shop.
So how do you do it?

Selling your products wholesale
It’s been some years since I closed my wholesale website and stopped selling my art products wholesale, but it was a good source of income while I was.
At the height of it’s success, my wholesale orders alone paid my rent every week (usually with some left over), meaning money I made through licensing, retail sales, original artwork sales and commissions was able to be allocated to other expenses.
I stopped doing it for a whole host of reasons, but the major one being that I was living in a very tiny flat at the time.
My bedroom turned into a stock room, my tiny lounge room and dining area turned into a work and packaging space, prints dried across the lounge itself meaning there was nowhere to sit down and we ate dinner squished onto the edge of Seth’s futon, which usually had a pile of stuff on it too.
For my sanity, it had to stop, but it IS something I’m considering picking up again at some point in the future. And while it lasted, this is how I went about it.

Ack. I hate shopping. And it’s not just me.
I just spend a chunk of my life that I’ll never get back at the Westfeild just down the road.
I also spent $86 of my tax return on almost nothing. A pair of underpants, a pack of 12 socks, a couple of packs of wall anchors to hang some shelves, some adhesive contact paper, a craft knife, a little paperback full of recipes that are gluten free and contain 4 ingredients (yes, I’m that lazy).
And hey presto, $86.
WHAT?

Oh yes
Just lodged my pain in the arse tax return using the pain in the arse e-tax all by my pain in the arse self (wait…what?). Ha!
And actually, the e-tax thing isn’t as hard as it seemed like it would be. Admittedly, I am sitting up to my chin in papers and receipts and sweat has made my glasses slip down my nose so I look like a granny.
BUT!
MONEY!
Looks like I’m going to get just about all of the tax I paid back. I was expecting some back, but not that much. Ka-ching!
I think I’ll buy me a diamond encrusted toilet seat. Oh yes.
